Beceem Introduces Industry's First Mobile 4G-WiMAX Wave 2 Terminal Chipset

BCS200 pushes the 4G-WiMAX Performance Envelope into 4G Domain

Santa Clara, Calif., December 3, 2006 - In a move that continues its leadership in Mobile 4G-WiMAX , Beceem Communications (www.beceem.com) today announced the immediate availability of the industry's first baseband and RF chipset that supports all features of the Mobile 4G-WiMAX Wave 2 Profile. The BCS200 chipset, which includes advanced smart antenna technologies such as MIMO and beamforming plus Beceem's CMOS direct conversion radio, continues to set the industry standard for performance.

The BCS200 solution provides significant performance improvements that positions Beceem as the leading company to meet the launch requirements of 4G-WiMAX service providers focused on Wave 2, such as Sprint Nextel. Key performance benchmarks over MS120 solution include:

  • Greater than 25 Mbps total throughput
  • More than 25% reduction in active power consumption
  • Greater than 60% footprint reduction enabling 4G-WiMAX integration into space constraint applications such as mobile phones and consumer electronics

"Beceem was first to release a Wave 1 chipset and we are continuing our leadership in Mobile 4G-WiMAX with the introduction of BCS200 chipset as the first Wave 2 solution" said David Patterson, Vice President of Marketing at Beceem. "By enabling our customers to deliver commercial devices with MIMO capability in the 2nd half of 2007, our BCS200 captures the 'sweet spot' of the Mobile 4G-WiMAX market".

The BCS200 solution builds on Beceem's field-proven MS120 Wave 1 chipset and software that has been used successfully in early Mobile 4G-WiMAX trials and commercial deployments around the world. As a result, customers will benefit from Beceem's unmatched 4G-WiMAX experience, thereby significantly reducing their own development risk, cost and time-to-market when launching Mobile 4G-WiMAX products.

The BCS200 solution consists of:

  • The BCSB200 baseband chip and associated firmware implements Physical Layer (PHY) and Media Access Control (MAC) functionality with minimum processing load for the host processor.
  • The BCSR200 direct conversion CMOS radio supporting 2 GHz and 3 GHz designs, as well as dynamically programmable channel bandwidths from 5 MHz to 10 MHz thereby enabling seamless roaming among all 4G-WiMAX networks.
  • A complete reference design kit including driver software and RF calibration tools, facilitates rapid development of Mobile 4G-WiMAX devices by OEMs and ODMs.

BCS200 chipset samples and reference design kits are immediately available.
